Although they are friends, Dr. Cain sometimes questions Dr. West's judgement and ethics. (Dr. West can re-animate severed body parts and reattach them in bizarre combinations.) West prevails upon Cain to continue their partnership when he offers to recreate Cain's deceased sweetheart, Meg. Beginning with Meg's actual heart, which has been preserved, West begins to assemble the "perfect" woman with body parts acquired from a variety of sources. Their activities have aroused the suspicions of a police lieutenant who keeps them under surveillance. In the meantime, Dr. Cain has a new romantic interest, Francesca, who is very much alive and assembled quite nicely by nature. Francesca has a pet dog who is her devoted companion.
