Cat, a struggling artist, is living in a delapidated building as the superintendent. One day when water is flooding the hallway, Cat discovers his good friend in the bathtub with his wrists slashed. The "slumlord" immediately brings in a new tenant to fill the deceased man's apartment and Cat is convinced (as he has been eavesdropping through the air shaft) that this new tenant, Madis, is responsible for the death of his friend. Through much amateur detective work, Cat and one of his neighbors, Lisa, discover that Cat is right. Madis needed the apartment to do the job he was hired to do.
